Part 5: Religion and Sex
In the final sections of the political compass test, we come to my opinions on religion and sex. Feel free to complete the test alongside me and be sure to enter your results into the comments below.
Let’s get into it.
Astrology is bullshit. No further explanation needed.
Having faith in a higher power does not make you moral. Doing virtuous things makes you moral. Religion itself is a massive hotchpotch of ideas and guidelines. What makes you a good Christian probably won’t make you a good Muslim, and what makes you a good Jew probably won’t make you a good Buddhist.
Charity is a far better system of giving than Social Security. Those who give feel good about their generosity and those who receive are able to do so guilt free. Money is not raked from the tight hands of those who do not want to give. When it comes to helping the genuinely disadvantaged, charity not only provides money but ongoing assistance, as churches and non-profit organisations are able to extend help in more ways than one. As a middleman, the government is the worst. They cast the widest of all nets and lose the most to administrative costs. Social security and charity should both exist, but one is better than the other.
There is no such thing as luck. There are only good decisions and bad decisions, fortunate coincidences and unfortunate coincidences.
If I wanted my child instilled with religious values, I’d send them to a religious private school. I’m not religious, however, so I’d prefer my child’s education to remain as secular as possible.
Marriage is not a guarantee of morality, and sex outside of marriage is not an immoral act. How do we even go about defining ‘morality’ in the bedroom? Is moral sex one where the only purpose is to conceive a child? Why am I suddenly a better person for having sex on my wedding night and not the day before? Does it have to do with love? What is love? Why am I tearing my hair out!? Well, I know at least one thing; if sex outside of marriage is immoral, then there are a lot of immoral people.
There is nothing that makes a same-sex couple less capable of caring for a child. If they are indeed stable and loving, then I see no reason why they shouldn’t be able to care for a child whose own parents weren’t able to provide those things.
There is no reason why pornography should be illegal. Pornography is free speech just like most products and forms of art. If you’re worried about the conservative values of your children, enforce those rules onto your own household and leave the rest of society alone; you don’t always know what’s best for everyone else. It is none of your business and should be none of your concern.
Unless you want men in suits telling you where to put it, you should agree with this statement. The government simply has no place in the bedrooms of its citizens.
Science has proven that homosexuality is a natural occurrence. No one chooses to be gay, as it’s not a decision you can make. In certain countries, gays are still being persecuted and murdered simply for their sexuality. If sexuality was a choice, those horrible things wouldn’t be happening to those people.
If you want to be open about what you and your partner did last night, go ahead. There is no need to force a taboo on something everyone does. You’re free to talk, and you’re free to listen.
